Fate Expectations - New Writing 2018
One moment can change everything. It can change a life forever - do things you never imagined possible or fear more than anything. But when faced with that life-changing moment, which path will you take? And how can you know it's ever the right one?
In keeping with the PTC 'Rags to Riches' season, our new brief wants to explore how that journey of change could play out for any character - emotionally, physically, maybe even geographically (feel free to pick your own adverbs and sprinkle them liberally throughout your writing)! You don't have to limit yourself to the literal meaning of Rags to Riches - it doesn't have to be a journey of someone becoming a millionaire or losing everything they own. Think instead about the highest and lowest moments a person might experience, things that will change their lives in new ways - for better, or for worse.
Each piece should revolve around a key turning point or moment in the life of someone who's life is destined to change - whether Rags to Riches, or vice versa. However it happens and whatever the consequences, that's up to you.
There's no restriction on genre or format for your piece - you can explore the situation of change in however you feel best tells your story. It can be filled with darkness or full of hope. Feel free to play around with convention and ways of storytelling through uses of time and situation - but give us a strong idea with a clear turning point for your character/characters - and most importantly, characters we can really latch onto and empathise with!
This year's pieces will be performed in our Studio Space at Putney Arts Theatre. This is a smaller space than our main stage so we encourage writing for a simple set - but feel free to think about using lighting or sound as a way to emphasise certain elements of your piece. Please write for a maximum of 4 actors (though you could technically have as many characters as you liked, as long as they could double!). We're looking for pieces of anything up to 15 minutes.
The deadline for delivering your submission is Friday 8th December. We'll be taking successful submissions through two rounds of development to help make your script even better, with the final decision of pieces being made by the middle of February, and performances in May 2018.
Advice for submissions:
