The Real Thing

by Tom Stoppard

Henry, “one of your intellectual playwrights,” has written a witty play about adultery in which his wife, Charlotte, is playing the female lead. Her co-star, Max, is married to another actress, Annie.

When Henry’s affair with Annie threatens to shatter both their marriages it seems that the line between art and life is becoming blurred.

But is their love the real thing?

Stoppard’s 1982 comedy explores themes of commitment and fidelity, as well as the relationship between artifice and truth, showcasing the playwright’s usual scintillating wordplay while also touching the heart.
